Spaces come in all forms.  They can be physical, mental, or emotional. But the most important space you have, which should be protected at all costs is the space you hold for your TIME.  Why? Because when people are permitted to cross into space allocated for you time, it often affects every other type of space you hold.  For example...

  • Someone calls. You pick up the phone and engage. Their energy drains you.  You're now emotionally spent.
  • A client is allowed more access to you than you are compensated.  You are mentally stressed by the work overload and inability to capitalize on that time.
  • You've said YES to something that should have been a NO, taking time away from the needed rest and reset you must have in order to re-energize.  Now you're feeling the physical repercussions of not doing what was right for you.

The choice to protect your time seems like a no-brainer, but for some of us it isn't always easy.  For years I've looked at the people in my life whom many would call "selfish" with envy.  I wonder how they can say no so easily. How they have no fear of looking like a B!*ch or an A$$hole, choosing to take care of themselves first.  But here's the deal...

They've figured out something I wished I'd learned sooner.  Personal relationships and friendships can play the victim to scope creep just like professional ones can. Be on alert the next time someone tries to creep into that time you've allocated for your well being, your business, or your making money. If their presence isn't serving any one of those purposes, and you let them enter your ME zone, you lose not only your time, but whatever goodness would have come from it.
