I've never had a positive client relationship develop from someone who wants my high-end performance for a low-end payment. I've never had someone value me more than I'm willing to value myself. And I've learned always to be leery of those who want to pay me on the strength of a promise rather than a paycheck.
Sometimes, people try to psyche you out to get something for nothing. These people will glaze over the details of what they want, to make it seem like their ask is minimal–Minimizing what you do in the process. They'll say things like, "I just need,..." or the "It's just a simple...," to convince you that what they want you to do isn't worth what it's worth. When this is what you do every single day.🤨
But here's the deal...if what you do doesn't hold value, there would be no conversation. Always ask yourself if you want to work with these types of people? People who would approach you, ask you to do free work, and devalue you, and the work, while they're asking.
The occasional pro-bono project is a wonderful way to give back. But limit them. Choose them wisely. Have discernment. And make sure it's a win-win for everyone, including you. Being paid with promises isn't guaranteed and while some may feel you could be losing sight of the bigger picture, just remember... you're operating on the strength of the promise you made to yourself when you started your business. And that's the only promise you can take to the bank.
